Centres for Excellence in Maths

Centres for Excellence in Maths (CfEM) was a five-year DfE-funded national improvement programme aimed at delivering sustained improvements in maths outcomes for 16-19-year-olds, up to Level 2. The project ended in March 2023.

More about the focus of the CfEM programme

The project focused particularly on an adapted maths mastery approach suitable for post-16 learners, based on five key principles. A randomised control trial involving 147 college sites and 7453 GCSE re-sit learners showed that learners taught according to these five principles made one month’s additional progress compared to a control group – while more deprived learners gained an additional two months progress.

Resources and evidence from the CfEM programme

Legacy resources from the project – including mastery schemes of work and lesson resources, plus research evidence – are available to access and can be found on the CfEM Resources and Evidence Hub.
